Chiefs, elders, and residents from across Grand Bassa County, particularly areas impacted by ArcelorMittal Liberia’s (AML) operations, have formally endorsed the company’s Phase II expansion under its third Mineral Development Agreement (MDA).
The endorsement took place on Saturday March 22, 2025, at the Civil Compound in Wayzohn City, following a series of community discussions and recommendations. Local leaders, legislative representatives, and community members gathered to express their support, citing the economic and social benefits the expansion is expected to bring.
Reading the official endorsement statement, Madam Glady Gueh urged ArcelorMittal Liberia to increase the county’s Social Development Fund from $1 million to $2 million.
She emphasized the pressing need for modern schools, expanded job opportunities, and improved infrastructure in affected communities.
“The people of Grand Bassa are calling on Mittal to enhance the living conditions of its employees and provide more opportunities for local, national, and international scholarships,” Gueh stated.
The community petition called for AML to expand its focus on technical and vocational education and invest in key infrastructure projects, particularly roads, to facilitate transportation and economic activities.
P. Maxwell Vah, a prominent son of Wee District, stressed the importance of a unified front in supporting AML’s continued investment.
“This expansion is a significant opportunity for Grand Bassa County. We must prioritize the extension of ArcelorMittal Liberia’s investment and push for the approval of its third Mineral Development Agreement,” Vah urged.
Other local leaders from Buchanan, Gorblee, Blezee, and Nuewein Administrative Districts echoed similar sentiments.
They underscored the need for AML to focus on infrastructure improvements, including teacher housing, school renovations, and healthcare facilities.
While praising ArcelorMittal Liberia’s contributions to local employment, community representatives encouraged the company to strengthen its collaboration with the county to ensure sustainable development.
They called for continued dialogue between AML and community stakeholders to address pressing needs and ensure that development projects align with local priorities.
As AML moves forward with its expansion plans, the resounding endorsement from Grand Bassa County signals strong community backing but also a clear expectation for increased corporate social responsibility and long-term investment in the region’s future.
