By Solomon T. Gaye, Sr.

Some L$400 collected by the United Methodist University College of Health Sciences from students who reportedly never attended grade conference meeting is brewing tension between the students and the administration in Ganta, Nimba County.

Affected students of the University told this paper that many of them were being denied of attending classes for their alleged refusal to pay before sitting in class, stating that the collection is for not attending grade conference; a guideline or rules not written in the students’ handbook.

They accused the administration of running the school to enrich themselves and their families without the knowledge of the UMU’s President, Gono. The students explained how many of them are far away from their families, therefore the collection of such money for another person’s pocket is hampering their learning.

The University is among various universities catering to more than 180 students who are studying the natural sciences. Separately, a worker with the university who, for anonymity also accused the administration for using the Sue Porter Hall to Non-Governmental Organizations to generate funds that do not go into the university’s account.

When the University’s Director, Clinton Zantoe was contacted for comment, he refused on ground that he had just returned to Ganta from Monrovia.
