A Renowned Liberian Activist Rev. Torli H. Krua has challenged prominent human rights lawyer and former presidential candidate Cllr. Tiawan Saye Gongloe to a national debate on Liberia’s sovereignty and the need for a new constitution.
His challenge comes after Gongloe condemned ‘unconstitutional’ actions by a group of lawmakers known as the “Majority Bloc” who attempted to remove House Speaker J. Fonati Koffa.
Gongloe described their actions as a blatant violation of the Constitution, warning of threats to Liberia’s democratic integrity and stability.
Despite his efforts to uphold the rule of law, Krua argued that such measures do not address the root causes of Liberia’s governance issues, rather Gongle’s concerns only address symptoms of a deeper issue: Liberia’s lack of true democracy.
Krua believes that Liberia’s governance system, established by American slave masters, is fundamentally flawed and has never truly served the people.
He advocates for a complete rebirth of the nation through a Sovereign Citizens’ Convention, where citizens can draft a new constitution and establish participatory democracy.
This approach he noted would empower citizens to be the true masters of their government, ensuring transparency, justice, and equity.
However, Krua said the debate if held, will be followed by a national poll to determine whether Liberians prefer to continue under the current system or create a new nation with participatory democratic governance.
As Liberia navigates this critical moment, both Krua and Gongloe are pushing for different paths to address the nation’s governance challenges. While Gongloe seeks to uphold the rule of law within the existing framework, Krua advocates for a radical transformation of the system to ensure true democracy and sovereignty for the Liberian people.
Krua is a US-based Liberian who also leads a lawsuit against the U.S. government, seeking visa waivers for Liberians and challenging historical injustices.
