The Chairperson of the Transitional Advisory Committee of the Global Methodist Church, Jerry P. Kula, has promised to uphold the biblical principles of Christianity.
Rev. Kula said the Global Methodist Church emerged in response to the new Book of Discipline (2020–2024) of the United Methodist Church Annual Conference, which adopted same-sex marriage in the Methodist Church.
He lamented to a team of journalists during an interview on March 29, 2025, in Harper City, Maryland County, following a two-day intensive training session with the new leadership of the Global Methodist Church in Harper City.
According to him, the Liberian Chapter of the United Methodist Church had drafted a resolution to disaffiliate from the UMC if the adoption of same-sex marriage were to take place in the Church.
Moreover, Rev. Kula stressed that all United Methodist Churches in Liberia had agreed in the 2019 and 2024 conferences to disaffiliate from the Methodist Church if same-sex marriage were passed in the UMC worldwide.
However, he explained that the United Methodist Church had abandoned Christianity, which is why he and other members of the UMC had disassociated themselves from their former Church.
He emphasized that sodomy is a crime in Liberia, stating that the Liberian Constitution does not allow such an act to be practiced in Liberia and that they contradict the country’s cultural values.
Speaking at the training session, Rev Kula alleged that hundreds of U.S. United Methodist members, including reverends, are mixed in same-sex marriages, which he described as an abomination.
He noted that a part of the new Book of Discipline endorses relationships between a man and a woman or between two consenting adults of faith, stating that they should have full support from the Church and should not face discrimination.
He said the decision has given many gay and lesbian individuals the right to become pastors in the United Methodist Church in Liberia.
Rev. Jerry Kula stated that the Global Methodist Church is also a European church that was established in Liberia on February 14, 2025, to win souls for God.
