The Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection (MGCSP) in collaboration with partners commemorated International Men’s Day 2024 on Wednesday, November 27, in Bopolu City, Gbarpolu County.
This year’s program was held under the National Theme; “Male Allies Supporting Women Empowerment to Reduce Gender-Based Violence.” International Men’s Day is celebrated on November 19 every year.
The gathering brought together men from diverse professional backgrounds celebrating and highlighting the pivotal role of men in combating all forms of violence against women, girls, and children while promoting gender equality.
Delivering a special remark on behalf of the Minister of Gender, Children, and Social Protection, Frederick S. Cooper, Deputy Minister for Administration, emphasized the need for men to become active allies in advancing gender equality.
He described male allies as “foundational pillars” in the fight against gender-based violence and urged men to challenge harmful socio-cultural norms that perpetuate inequality.
“Men must be more than passive observers; we must become active participants and fierce advocates against gender-based violence,” Cooper stated.
The Deputy Minister called on men to amplify the voices of women and girls and advocate for inclusive policies and accountability in their communities.
He also highlighted the importance of mentoring young boys, teaching them that vulnerability is a strength, not a weakness and that respecting women and girls enhances humanity.
“As male allies, we can dismantle stereotypes and create a space where everyone is heard and valued,” he added.
The program featured impactful working sessions led by professionals and activists who shared insights on fostering positive masculinity and the role of men in eradicating gender-based violence.
Mr. Oliver Lavala, Livelihood Specialist at the Liberia Women Empowerment Project (LWEP), facilitated a session on Positive Masculinity.
At the same time, Moses Tamba of the Liberia National Red Cross Society discussed Engaging Men as Allies. Donnish M. Pewee from Youth Transforming Africa Narrative led a session on Men’s Role in Eradicating Domestic Gender-Based Violence. Traditional leaders and professionals from key sectors reaffirmed their commitment to standing against discrimination and inequality.
They pledged to champion gender equality and work to eliminate violence against women and children in their communities.
The event also underscored the importance of men’s active participation in reshaping societal attitudes and behaviors for future generations.
Observed under the global theme “Positive Male Role Models” and the national theme “Transforming Men and Boys into Positive Future Role Mentors to Impact Society,” the program highlighted Liberia’s dedication to advancing gender equality. The Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection, alongside its partners, reaffirmed its commitment to creating a safer, more inclusive society where every individual, regardless of gender, can thrive.
