From Soldier To Minister: Geraldine Looks Back At Her “Transformative Journey”

Liberia’s Defense Minister, Geraldine J. George, recently reflected on her extensive career within the Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL) thus landing her to the helm of the military as the first female Defense Minister.
The AFL has long stood as a beacon of integrity, discipline, and courage and now it is recognized for its role in developing future leaders.
As the AFL continues its professionalization journey, it positions itself as a “Force for Good,” preparing its soldiers to tackle both military and civilian challenges.
Speaking on her transition from soldier to Minister, George credited the AFL’s rigorous training programs for equipping her with the leadership and strategic insights necessary for her current role.
“The training I received in the AFL prepared me for broader leadership roles,” George stated.
According to the Minister, the AFL’s training regimen transforms recruits into highly disciplined professionals, teaching essential skills such as communication, physical fitness, first aid, and battlefield survival.
“The military takes individuals from all walks of life and shapes them into focused, disciplined soldiers,” she said, likening the process to a jeweler refining raw stone into a polished gem.
George emphasized that one of the key takeaways from her military career has been the ability to systematically and logically analyze challenges.
She cited the ancient strategist Sun Tzu’s adage, “When you sweat more in peace, you bleed less in war,” highlighting the importance of relentless preparation a guiding principle in both her military and civilian leadership.
Leadership, George noted, was a cornerstone of her time in the AFL. “Leadership in the military is about more than just giving orders. It’s about empathy, fairness, and looking out for the well-being of your subordinates,” she explained.
These lessons, she said, have shaped her approach to leading the Ministry of National Defense, where she emphasizes teamwork, discipline, and clear communication.
Effective planning, another crucial skill honed in the military, has been invaluable to George’s career.
The Minister credited the AFL’s emphasis on strategic thinking and adaptability for her ability to navigate complex challenges pointing out, discipline is the bedrock of military life and leadership.
“In the military, discipline isn’t just about punishment it’s about adhering to standards and mission objectives,” she explained.
Looking back on her years in the AFL, George expressed a deep sense of pride and gratitude. “My time in the AFL was not just a career it was a transformative journey that provided me with the tools to lead strategically and ethically,” she said.
Now, as Minister of National Defense, she remains confident in the AFL’s future, overseeing the force with the same principles of discipline, leadership, and strategic foresight that she learned during her military career.
George concluded by expressing her appreciation for the opportunity to serve and lead, both in the AFL and now as Minister of National Defense.
She reaffirmed her commitment to ensuring that the AFL continues to serve as a “Force for Good” in Liberia and beyond.
