Former OTC Worker Petition House

Some former workers of the Oriental Timbers Company (OTC) have called on the House of Representatives to request the Ministry of Finance to pay their benefits.
A statement released by the House Press Bureau said the call of the OTC former workers’ was made when they petitioned the august body on Tuesday, August 20, 2024.
The former OTC workers’ claimed that prior to the closure of the company during the Liberian Civil Crisis in 2003, the House of Representatives, which is in possession of legislation, authorized the payment along with the General Auditing Commission, tasked with auditing the process.
The former workers, comprising a little over 23, 000 people, claimed to be indebted by US$ 7 million.
According to them, the lack of payment has rendered scores of them to face harsh economic conditions, including enrolling their children in schools.
Receiving the petition, Montserrado County District 14 Representative, Muka Kamara, lauded the resilience of the aggrieved workers’.
Representative Kamara called on them to exercise restraint, vowing to ensure that the Ministry of Finance remedy the situation.
Meanwhile, the OTC is a logging company, which operated in Grand Bassa, Sinoe, and Rivercess, among others, prior to the civil unrest in Liberia in 2003. Ministry of Finance and Development Planning.
