Top football stakeholders from across the country are set to gather at the National Football House on Saturday, April 12, 2025, for the 29th Ordinary Congress of the Liberia Football Association (LFA). This annual constitutional gathering serves as a key moment in the football calendar, where critical decisions on the management of the sport, including the review of the yearly report and passage of the budget, will be made.
As the mandated body responsible for overseeing the congress activities in accordance with the statutes and regulations of the game, the LFA is finalizing the formalities for the upcoming congress, which is expected to attract significant attention.
LFA Acting Media Manager, Anthony Kokoi, spoke to this paper on Wednesday, explaining the significance of the congress in football governance. He emphasized that the event provides a platform for stakeholders to come together and discuss the pressing issues affecting the sector.
Preparations for the 29th Ordinary Congress have already begun. According to Kokoi, the congress started with a series of preliminary activities designed to involve clubs and other stakeholders of the football association. These entities have been invited to submit their concerns and proposals for inclusion in the agenda, ensuring that all voices are heard.
The LFA has reviewed the agenda for the congress and distributed it to all stakeholders for their feedbacks and inputs. This collaborative approach is in keeping with the rules of congress, and Kokoi stressed that the leadership of the FA is committed to transparency in all proceedings. “The LFA is committed to openness and fairness, and we are engaging with all relevant actors, regardless of their affiliations or relationships,” he said.
This year’s congress comes amid heightened political attention as Liberia prepares for the 2026 elections. In recent weeks, there have been allegations that certain members of the football association may be targeted due to their stance against the incumbent leadership. However, Kokoi has strongly denied these claims, clarifying that all decisions made at congresses, both locally and globally, are based on proposals and concerns raised by the members. “Every decision during the congress is guided by the contributions of the stakeholders. The process is transparent and in line with the FA’s governance framework,” he explained.
As part of the lead-up to the congress, the LFA organized an engagement with clubs on Tuesday, where topics such as the president’s report, the financial audited statement, and various proposals were discussed. Kokoi noted that the majority of clubs attended the meeting, which resulted in a productive exchange of ideas and perspectives.
Regarding concerns about security, particularly with the actions of the Student Unification Party, Kokoi reassured that the Liberia National Police would be on hand to ensure the safety and integrity of the congress proceedings. “The police will be present to maintain order and ensure that the congress is conducted in a peaceful and secured environment,” Kokoi confirmed.
With key decisions expected to be made at this year’s congress, all eyes will be on the National Football House this weekend as stakeholders seek to shape the future of football in Liberia.
