By Grace Q. Bryant
A group of former Liberian lawmakers has created a Special Mediation Committee to speak to the political deadlock within the House of Representatives.
On October 17, 47 Representatives signed a resolution calling for the removal of the House Speaker, which has since led to significant division among lawmakers.
A statement released on Monday in Monrovia announced that, in the interest of maintaining national peace and stability, this group had come together to establish the committee.
The release stated that the committee’s primary goal is to mediate the constitutional and political crisis in the House of Representatives of Liberia’s 55th Legislature. Authorized to engage all parties involved in the dispute, the committee aims to reach a peaceful resolution that reflects the interests of the Liberian people.
The members appointed to the Special Mediation Committee include Prof. Edwin T. Juah, Alomiza M. Ennos, and Atty. Rufus D. Neufville
This committee is tasked with working collaboratively with all parties to prevent a potential constitutional crisis and to safeguard Liberia’s emerging democracy.
Additionally, they have been directed to engage with Senate leadership and other local and international stakeholders to help resolve the impasse in the House of Representatives.
According to the former lawmakers, this initiative is designed to protect Liberia’s democratic values and ensure stability in the legislative process.
