FLY Urges Dialogue In CDC-Police Conflict

By Linus Flomo
The Federation of Liberian Youth (FLY) has voiced grave concerns over the escalating tensions between the Liberia National Police and members of the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC), the country’s main opposition party.
As the largest youth organization in Liberia, FLY warned that the ongoing clashes pose a significant threat to the peace and stability that the nation has painstakingly maintained over the years.
In a recent statement released, FLY called on the Liberia National Police to exercise maximum restraint and handle the situation with the utmost professionalism, emphasizing the importance of respecting human rights.
The youth group underscored that the right to peaceful assembly is a fundamental pillar of Liberia’s democracy and urged the police to protect this right while ensuring the safety and security of all citizens.
FLY also encouraged the police to engage in dialogue with the protesters, warning against any actions that might escalate the already tense situation.
The organization acknowledged the CDC’s right to assemble and express its views and grievances, but strongly urged the party to do so through peaceful means.
“Dialogue and non-violent protest are the most effective ways to bring about positive change and ensure that voices are heard,” FLY stated, stressing the importance of maintaining peace during this critical time.
Furthermore, FLY reminded the Liberian government of its responsibility to uphold peace and stability across the nation.
The youth body urged the government to create an environment where all citizens can freely and safely express themselves without fear of retribution.
“We call on the government to take immediate steps to de-escalate the situation and to facilitate constructive dialogue between all parties involved,” FLY added.
The organization affirmed its readiness to support any efforts aimed at fostering peace and dialogue in Liberia.
FLY reiterated that the future of Liberia depends on the collective commitment of its people to uphold the principles of democracy, peace, and the rule of law.
The youth group’s call for dialogue comes at a critical time, as tensions continue to rise between the police and opposition members, threatening the nation’s hard-won peace.
