Ethiopian Airlines marked a historic return to Liberia on Saturday, November 30, 2024, landing at Roberts International Airport for the first time in over three decades.
The arrival of the airline was celebrated with an official ceremony attended by government officials, diplomats, and international partners.
Ethiopian Airlines Group, recognized as one of the world’s fastest-growing airline brands, is also Africa’s largest carrier.
With 78 years of operational success, Ethiopian Airlines has become one of the leading carriers on the continent, renowned for its efficiency and remarkable growth.
The milestone flight, which brought 261 passengers to Liberia, signifies not only the revival of an important international air route but also the strengthening of economic and cultural ties between Ethiopia and Liberia.
At the official event held at the Farmington Hotel, Ethiopian Airlines’ Chief Commercial Officer, Lemma Yadecha, expressed his gratitude to the stakeholders involved in making the agreement possible.
He specifically acknowledged the leadership of President Joseph Boakai, whose efforts were pivotal in the airline’s decision to resume flights to Liberia.
“This flight is a significant step in bridging the gap between our two nations,” Yadecha said. “The relationship between Ethiopia and Liberia has deep historical roots, dating back to November 1966 when Ethiopian Airlines first flew into Liberia. We are here today to continue that legacy and offer top-quality service to our travelers.”
Yadecha further emphasized that Ethiopian Airlines will operate three flights a week between Addis Ababa and Liberia, on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays, with plans to increase the frequency as demand grows.
In his address, Liberia’s Transport Minister, Sirleaf Tyler, warmly welcomed the airline’s return.
He shared that during the negotiations, he had made a personal pledge to be aboard the first flight back to Liberia, fulfilling the vision of President Boakai to make international travel more affordable and accessible for Liberians.
“This is not just about bringing a flight back to Liberia. It’s about opening up more opportunities for our people,” Minister Tyler stated; highlighting that Ethiopian Airlines’ global network, which includes 142 cities worldwide, offers Liberians greater access to international markets.
Tyler also assured the gathering that with the airline’s competitive pricing, it would become a more affordable travel option for many Liberians.
“The return of Ethiopian Airlines is a clear indication that we are on the right path toward economic growth,” Tyler continued. “This is not a temporary move; Ethiopian Airlines is here to stay in Liberia.”
President Joseph Boakai, who also spoke at the ceremony, underscored the importance of the airline’s return to Liberia thereby describing it as a significant step toward Liberia’s economic growth and global integration.
The President acknowledged the historic relationship between Ethiopia and Liberia, two nations that are pioneers in African independence and Pan-Africanism.
“This is more than just a flight. It is a gateway to economic opportunities, trade, and cultural exchange,” President Boakai said. “We are proud to renew this important connection with Ethiopia.”
