Emergency Food Assistance

The Ministry of Education and the world Food Program have officially launched the “COVID-19 crisis response assistance to school going children and their vulnerable families.
The project is funded by the Government of the People’s Republic of China and of this contribution, a total of 276,250 food insecure Liberians will benefit from this food assistance amidst a deteriorating food security situation due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The first take home rations were handed over to food insecure school children and their families by the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Liberia.
With the generous support from the Government of the People’s Republic of China of USD 2 million, WFP will assist 55. 250 per- primary and primary school children and their households with a one- time, two months ration of rice.
The food assistance will benefit highly vulnerable school children and their families in Montserrado, Nimba and Maryland counties that have some of the highest levels of food insecurity in Liberia.
Meanwhile, the support of the People’s Republic of China is crucial for the optimal growth and development of these young children and it will reduce household expenditures on food, which is of particular importance given the unaffordability of food for most families due to pandemic related economic hardships.
The World Food Program and the Ministry of Education will jointly implement this emergency food assistance response.
The first food distribution was launched in Montserrado County during the official handover ceremony on December 22, at the Wein Town Public School in Montserrado County.
