By Bill W. Cooper
The Democratic People’s Party of Liberia (DPPL) has elected its new political leader and several other party officials to steer the affairs of the party ahead of the 2023 Presidential and Representatives Elections.
Other party officials elected at the Party’s first National Convention in the Port City of Buchanan, Grand Bassa County over the weekend, include N. Dickson Tamba, National Chairman; John Pangbe, Secretary General; and Mrs. Kim Varnie, National Treasurer.
Others are Joseph Bush Trinithy, Vice chair for Inter Party and NEC Affairs, Hezekiah E. Myers, National vice chair for Finance and Investment, Rev. Josephus S. Korfeh, National vice for recruitment and mobilization and others.
Notably, the Convention, held under the theme: “Leadership in Politics for Greater Democratic and Good Governance in Liberia,” brought face-to-face several party’s delegates from across the 15 counties, as it was also witnessed by Abraham B. Kanneh, from the National Elections Commission (NEC) and other prominent Liberians and political actors.
The DPPL is a duly registered political party and recognized by the National Elections Commission under the elections’ laws of Liberia and it was certificated on November 24, 2021, consistent with its aims and objectives to obtain state power lawfully.
Speaking to scores of partisans following his election, the DPPL political leader, Rev. David Kiamu in a joyful posture thanked partisans for their confidence reposed in him to lead the party to victory during the 2023 elections for a better Liberia.
Rev. Kaimu then vowed to ensure that Liberia under a DPPL leadership be transformed within two years of power, stressing, “I say this to all Liberians that DPPL is ready and prepared to bring about the needed change that this country so desire and that will be done in two years of our leadership when given the opportunity.”
“And if we are elected and do not change this country in making sure that Liberia is corruption-free, and that the rule of law is respected with a stable and vibrant economy in two years of our leadership, impeach and prosecute us,” he vowed.
He explained that Liberia is now at the cross road and in dire need of a credible and vibrant leadership, and as such, the DPPL is in position to deliver a leadership that will advocate for upholding of the traditional positive values and norms on which Liberia was established/founded.
He indicated also that under his leadership as President of Liberia, he will ensure that everyone benefits from education, vernaculars, health, and youth empowerment, noting that health services will be separated from social welfare as it will be available and affordable to all Liberians irrespective of his/her religious or political affiliation.
According to him, Liberia, under his leadership, will move away from an extractive industry system to a production industry system that will create over 100,000 jobs annually as well as will also decentralize resources collected in the country.
The DPPL PL further indicated that 60 percent of all resources raised in each county, will be managed by that county, while only 40 percent will go to central government, adding, “Under our leadership, we will ensure that corruption crimes court will be established to deal with corruption cases speedily.”
Meanwhile, Rev. Kaimu has also pointed out that his DPPL leadership will bring about administration discipline, human/citizens discipline, and adhering to the rule of law, healthcare, economic empowerment, democratic development among others.
Earlier, Liberia’s former Chief Justice, Gloria Musu Scott also vented her anger on past and current leadership for not doing much to ensure that Liberia is on par with other Comity of Nations, something which she said has now left many to see Liberia as a “laughing stock.”
The Country’s former High Court priest stated that many at times she sits and ponders as to why Liberia with the abundance of resources will at her age still be begging other nations for help, stressing that the lack of leadership, massive corruption; mysterious deaths coupled with impunity are major reasons for the country’s backwardness.
Madam Scott then lauded the DPPL on the occasion marking its first convention cautioned the party to be different from other political parties, stressing that Liberians are now in dire need of visionary and patriotic leaders and not multiplicity of political parties or business as usual.
