Cummings On Huge Employment In Gov’t

By Bill W. Cooper
The political leader of the Alternative National Congress (ANC), Alexander Cummings, has criticized the appointment of large number of people in government; describing it as a recipe for compromising individuals and groups’ principles.
Mr. Cummings believed that if the government continues to be the biggest employers, this could lead to inefficiency, continuous corruption and lack of accountability in government thus leaving the greater citizenry to languish in poverty.
He said, “Corruption does not have to continue to be the pathway to success and prosperity. The government does not have to and should not continue to be the biggest employer so that our individual and group principles are continuously compromised and determined by our quests for government jobs.”
Mr. Cummings spoke, Monday, April 15, 2024, during a program marking the official dissolution of the Collaborating Political Parties (CPP), a conglomeration of the Alternative National Congress (ANC) and embattled Liberty Party (LP).
Cumming is a two-time defeated presidential candidate, as his first loss occurred during the 2017 presidential election which brought former President George Weah to the presidency and just ended October 10, 2023 President election which witnessed Joseph Boakai emerging as the winner.
His assertion also comes in the wake of a growing concern from the Unity Party (UP) government about the bloated government bureaucracy and the need for reform to ensure that public resources are used effectively and efficiently.
Speaking about the current state of affairs under the President Joseph Boakai, the ANC leader noted that while it is true that the government is still young; he vowed to hold the Boakai’s administration to the fire in a quest to end corruption and division among the citizenry.
He also called for a more streamlined and efficient government structure that prioritizes meritocracy and transparency; something he said, by reducing the size of the government and focusing on hiring qualified individuals based on their skills and experience would lead to better governance and improved service delivery for the Liberian people.
