CPP Member Denounces Postponement Of Midterm Elections

A member of the Collaborating Political Party (CPP) has condemned government’s decision on the postponement of the midterm senatorial election scheduled for mid October to December.
Laraamand Nyonton who was a candidate in the 2017 Presidential and Representative Elections in District # 12, Monstserrado County is blaming the NEC for not making proper preparations for the election prior to the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic for which it has registered an early postponement of the pending election alongside a crucial referendum.
Nyonton said, ‘We as Liberians take for granted what Liberia has been through and also that political stability and peace depend on how we understand the constitution of our country.”
He argued that coronavirus poses no threat to the conduct of elections because Liberia has more recovered cases than deaths as compared to other nations including Ghana, Ivory Coast, Burkinafaso, amongst other countries that are also going to elections in the midst of the pandemic.
However, Nyonton said the postponement of election will pose threat to what he described as the constitutional flow of democracy in Liberia.
He added that Liberia’s health authorities can contain the virus rather than using it as an excuse and maintain a free flow of its constitutional activities.
Laraamand also said he is not really concerned about who wins or loses in the pending election, instead he wants the government to ensure the stability of the state’s democracy and that the right things be done to uphold public policy and trust in Liberia.
