“Corruption Weakens Democracy” -LACC Boss Discloses

By Bill W. Cooper

The Chairperson of the Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission (LACC), Alexandra Zoe, asserts that rampant corruption is undermining public trust and democracy in Africa.

She also emphasized that the prevalence of corruption erodes public confidence in government institutions and weakens the foundation of democracy and so, the need to holistically combat this pervasive issue can never be over-emphasized.

Cllr. Zoe spoke at the close of the UN Human Rights Office supports joint dialogue between Liberia and Sierra Leone’s human rights and anti-corruption commissions in Freetown, Sierra Leone over the weekend.

The five-day joint exchange of experience focusing on the protection of human rights and fighting corruption concluded successfully in Freetown on Friday, May 31, 2024, underscoring the importance of collective efforts in addressing the intersection between corruption and human rights.

The event also saw the formulation of plans for a follow-up exchange visit and a dialogue between the two countries on the intersection between corruption and human rights, scheduled to be held in Monrovia in September.
