Congo Town Lion’s Club Gives To School

By Bill W. Cooper
In commemoration of the World Hunger Day around the world, the Congo Town Lions Club (CTLC) yesterday, fed and gave some assorted materials to over 90 students, including staff of the Monrovia School for the Deaf on the Old-Road.
The materials include; Bags of Rice, Sacks of Water, Cartons of sardines, Sanitary Pads, Oil Gallons, Tissues of Bags, Buckets, Towels, Clora Gallons and Dettol among others.
The Monrovia School for the Deaf which is situated on the Smyth Road in Old-Road came in to being by former Education Minister, Joseph Korto to incorporate those are unable to speak and hear, and it’s said to be the only School of the Deaf with Deaf Instructors and Administrators.
Speaking during the feeding and presentation ceremony at the institution, the president of the CTLC, Mohammed Sherrif indicated that their identifying with the deaf community is in line with the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 2, which says “No One should go to bed hungry.”
He added that his organization was delighted to be the first to identify with the deaf as they too are part of the society, adding “from the onset of my being here and from what I saw during a teaching period, was so amazing and could not imagine that these kids could have learnt the sound language as fast as possible and the normal lesson that others are learning.”
Lion Sherrif then lauded one of the teachers who was born by both deaf parents for her contribution toward the deaf and other teaching staff and the administrators for their frantic effort in ensuring that the children received the necessary education needed, while at the same time called on others to follow suit and be a blessing to them.
Receiving the items, the principal of the institution, Emmanuel Jacob lauded the CTLC for the items and said that he hopes that the CTLC and other well-meaning organization can identify with them every day.
He added that though he has mandated all parents to pay 25% of the total LD$10,000 tuition per student, many parents are finding it very difficult to pay said fees, as the institution is very challenging to pay the salary of its instructors.
Jacob then called on central government to see reason to get to their plight, indicating that they used to receive some assistance from the previous regime, but since the inception of the Weah led administration, said assistance had been cut off and are finding it very difficult to maintain the running of the institution.
In remarks, teacher Vivian Moulton and student Tupee Vah lauded the CTLC for making them happy by identifying with them on a historic day, stressing that they will never forget about such initiate from the CTLC, while at the same time encourage other well-meaning humanitarians to emulate the CTLC.Assorted Materials
