The Ministry of Commerce has vowed to arrest and prosecute individuals caught creating artificial shortage of petroleum products on the local market.
Minister Wilson Tarpeh told the media yesterday in Monrovia that there is no shortage of petroleum products as there is enough gas and fuel in the country.
He then warned unscrupulous individuals to stop undermining government’s effort by trying to portray it negatively on the outside.
Tarpeh indicated that the Commerce Ministry takes daily inventory of the gas and fuel products on the local market; therefore, there should be absolutely no shortage of supply on the market.
On Tuesday, January 21, the country witnessed the scarcity of gas and fuel on the local market as filling stations nationwide were reportedly rationing the products while some of the filling stations were closed to the public.
Government stipulated pump price of gasoline is US$3.21 and fuel US$3.80 per gallon with such awareness to motorists and commuters, therefore, citizens and residents where surprised at the prompt and artificial shortage.
Tarpeh said Commerce Ministry is formulating a legislation that will protect Liberians and foreign businesses and among many things that, many Liberians are in the habit of fronting for foreigners.
Tarpeh who believes that when a legislation should be enacted to make fronting a “criminal offense” noting, “Our compatriots who are fronting for these foreigners or aliens are defrauding government which does not augur well for the country.”
