The president of Liberia Football Association (LFA) women’s outfit, Cocky Football Club, Teddy Dahn, has expressed interest in growing women’s football in the country, setting the process as the basis for which his club was established.
Dahn said women football in Liberia and some parts of Africa is at its infancy, and the system of growing it to the expected level depends on stakeholders with interest that will stand the test of time to make sure the sector gets to another level.
Speaking over the weekend, the women’s club president pointed out that the best women’s football programs in Africa currently stem from countries like Nigeria, South Africa, and Zambia, among others, which is not enough for the entire African continent.
According to him, Liberia has an opportunity as a country with a well-written history on the continent to build a female football program that can actually compete with the ones from neighboring countries.
He explained that his involvement in women football starts with his own club to give the avenue and opportunity to girls with talents and potentials that are playing female soccer in his organization to be the very best players.
Teddy Dahn further said that Cocky, as a club, is rebranding as a way to move into the future, and will be putting facilities in place aimed at making other arrangements for the young women and girls under their program to focus on their education and their footballing careers.
“As long as they say they want to play football, we must empower them in their educational journey, and we will also make sure we empower them to get all the support they need so that they can become the best football players that they can be, and when we are done at the club level, we will also be contributing to the success of the national team as well,” he stressed.
Teddy also hopes that the experience gained through building local clubs in the country can also be utilized at the national level.
We should all be willing to work together to make the Lone Star the kind of team that we need. However, it begins at the club level, so we are working hard at our club to make sure we are developing these players to be the best players so that they get to represent us at the national team level.
He graded the national team’s performance over the years on a lower scale that needs attention from all actors to have the country making successful representations when participating in international competitions at all levels.
He encouraged collective participation among women football stakeholders in the country so that their little efforts can go a long way to grow the women’s game in the country.
He urged the Liberia Football Association to work along with the clubs and other partners that are coming in to help and really promote women’s football so that they can help a lot of young girls.
