The National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) received a significant donation from the Chinese Embassy in Liberia, aimed at supporting those affected by recent flooding.
The donation, facilitated by the Ministry of State, included 200 bags of 25kg rice, 40 gallons of oil, and 600 cans of beef.
During the donation ceremony, NDMA Executive Director Ansu Dulleh expressed gratitude for the support but also highlighted the continuing needs of the flood victims.
“We appreciate the Chinese Embassy’s generosity, but with 45,000 people affected, this aid is only a small part of what is needed and so, we call on the government and international partners to continue their support,” Dulleh said.
Dulleh emphasized the importance of disaster reduction training and urged the government to recognize China’s contribution saying, “We need more resources to effectively distribute these items and to support our employees with additional resources and scholarships.”
On June 28, severe flash floods displaced thousands, with many victims still struggling to find stable shelter.
The NDMA had been concerned about how to support these individuals until the Chinese donation arrived.
Minister of State for Special Service Samuel A. Stevquoah, representing President Joseph Boakai, underscored the importance of international partnerships and said, “In times of need, we rely on our friends and partners, and China has consistently supported us. This donation is a testament to our enduring relationship and shared commitment.”
Chinese Ambassador to Liberia, Yin Chengwu, praised the NDMA for its efforts and reiterated China’s commitment to supporting Liberia expressing, “This donation is not just about providing immediate relief but also about demonstrating our friendship and shared future. China remains committed to standing by Liberia in these challenging times.”
The donation represents a broader pattern of cooperation between China and Liberia, reflecting a strong partnership aimed at addressing humanitarian challenges and fostering mutual support.
The NDMA will oversee the distribution of the aid and continue to work towards comprehensive disaster management strategies.
