CCRB Promises Intervention In Kinjor Protest

The Chairperson of the Civilian Complaint Review Board (CCRB), Sylvester D. Rennie, has promised that the Board of the Liberia National Police (LNP) and the Liberia Immigration Service (LIS) will carry out thorough review of the report and make necessary recommendations.
He said that the CCRB has received the report of the protest that resulted in the deaths of some citizens from the LNP through the Minister of Justice Oswald Tweh and that they will apply due diligence to it so as to achieve transparency.
The president of the Liberia National Bar Association (LNBA) who is by law the Chairperson of the CCRB made these assertions at a press conference on Wednesday, August 7, 2024 at the office of the Bar in Monrovia saying that the board is going to critically review proceedings that were followed during investigation that was conducted by the Professional Standard Division of the LNP.
According to him, they will also be conducting further investigation where necessary when they observe doubt(s) in the report for clarification adding that the CCRB is comprised of credible professionals from reputable institutions, like the president of the LNBA, representative of the Ministries of Justice, including the Internal Affairs, the Chair of the Independent National Commission of Human Rights (IHCHR).
Other members are, the president of the Federation of Liberian Youth (FLY), the Chair of the National Civil Society Council and the president of the Liberia National Law Enforcement Association.
“We would invite people of interest relative to the case and that they would also visit Bea Mountain Company Operation’s site where the protest took place in Grand Cape Mount County when necessary to gather further information,” he pointed out.
He furthered that the CCRB has also received an investigative report from the Crimes Services Division of the LNP through the office of the Attorney General of Liberia regarding a case of alleged Manslaughter and Aggravated Assault by employees of the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC) for its review and subsequent recommendations to the Minister of Justice.
Cllr. Rennie then recalled that the CCRB was enacted into law in 2016 with the mandate to receive, process and determine any complaint made against the LNP, LIS or any Police or Immigration Officer as well as civilian and as such, he encouraged each and every one to advantage of the board when their rights are being violated by security personnel in the country.
“Despite their duties to arrest violators of the law, they can also be reprimanded under the law based on their conduct,” he informed the public.
He however vowed that the CCRB shall be conducting transparent review of reports and make necessary recommendations to the Attorney General.
