Cassell Kouh Tables SWAL Headquarter Project With Leadership

One of Liberia’s leading football financiers, Anthony Cassell Kouh, has proposed a significant initiative to assist the Sports Writers Association of Liberia (SWAL) in constructing its first-ever headquarters. The pledge was made during SWAL’s 38th anniversary dinner on October 11, 2024, held at the SKD Stadium media room. Kouh expressed confidence that SWAL would celebrate its next anniversary in its own facility, emphasizing the need for collaboration and adequate funding to achieve this ambitious goal.
During his remarks as chief launcher of the program, Kouh acknowledged the challenges of building a headquarters, stating, “While I could contribute $5,000 or $10,000, that won’t be enough. Building a headquarters is a difficult task. I will work with the leadership to develop a comprehensive plan to build the headquarters as urgently as possible.” His remarks were met with enthusiastic applause from the SWAL members present.
Kouh further emphasized that SWAL’s progress is contingent on adequate financial resources. “SWAL can only be a great organization with adequate funding. If we must have a better SWAL, we need adequate finances,” he stressed, urging all stakeholders to rally around the organization for improved coverage of sports in Liberia.
Deputy Sports Minister Andy Quamie, who co-launched the event, called on SWAL members to maintain independence and strive for balanced and accurate reporting. “Ninety percent of your reports usually focus only on football,” he pointed out, urging sports journalists to prioritize coverage of other sporting federations and associations as well. Quamie pledged $1,000 on behalf of himself and Watanga Football Club, reinforcing the call for diverse coverage in sports journalism.
For his part, SWAL President Varmah Kamara recognized the invaluable support from partners and stakeholders, noting that their collaboration has been crucial to the growth of both sports and SWAL. He reaffirmed the commitment of sports journalists to promote sports, advocate for better facilities and opportunities for athletes, and tell stories that inspire and unite the nation.
Established in 1986, SWAL has evolved from humble beginnings into a powerhouse of Liberian sports journalism, significantly shaping the narrative of sports in the country over the past 38 years. Kuoh’s pledge marks a hopeful step toward a brighter future for sports reporting in Liberia, as the association prepares to turn this vision into reality and provide a dedicated space for its members to thrive.
