The Sports Steering Committee of Grand Cape Mount County emphatically rejected recent allegations made by an individual identifying himself as a fetish priest, who claimed that the county owes him US$2,500 for purportedly using traditional spiritual powers, or “juju,” to assist Cape Mount in winning the 2012-2013 National County Sports Meet football category.
The allegations, made by a man only identified as Satellite, went viral after he released a video in which he asserted that his spiritual intervention had led to Cape Mount’s success in 2013. Satellite claimed that the county leadership had failed to settle the debt, and he warned that unless paid, Cape Mount would not progress past the quarterfinals of the ongoing County Meet.
In an interview with our sports reporter, Committee Chairman Mohammed K. Daramie, dismissed these claims as unfounded, describing them as an attempt to disrupt the county’s preparations for the 2024 National County Sports Meet, which kicked off on Sunday.
“Cape Mount is not a ‘juju’ county,” Daramie declared. “Cape Mount is an Islamic dominated County so if someone could come up claiming that they maybe prayed as an Imam then we could be looking into that but not juju. We do not believe in juju. If the man were a Muslim, I might have taken him seriously.”
Daramie emphasized that the committee is focused on a successful tournament and is confident that both the county’s football and kickball teams will perform exceptionally well. “Our teams are highly motivated, and we’re offering players good cash for the games as motivation. Cape Mount is ready to prove the doubters wrong,” he added.
The steering committee chairman also highlighted those preparations for the County Meet’s opening ceremony and matches of the competition at newly upgraded Momo Tarweh Stadium in Robertsport, were all completed in time. The facility now boasts modern amenities, including nine bathrooms with running water, two dressing rooms, match official rooms, and ample seating, all meeting official standards.
“We’re ready to host the Chief Patron of Sports, President Joseph Boakai, and all guests in Robertsport City,” Daramie assured.
In response to the claims, the office of Grand Cape Mount County Superintendent issued a statement condemning the allegations as baseless and defamatory. Signed by Political Liaison Officer Hashim Amadu Pabai, the statement urged the public to disregard the video and reaffirmed the county’s commitment to transparency and accountability. It further called for those responsible for spreading the false claims to be held accountable.
Cape Mount’s teams begun their County Meet campaign with kickball and football matches against Nimba County, followed by a highly anticipated clash with defending football champions River Gee in their final group-stage games. President Joseph Boakai took the ceremonial kickoff during the opening ceremony.
Meanwhile, six counties from random venues were able to share spoils nationwide in football. Gbarpolu and Lofa played to a one-all draw in Sinoe while Maryland and Bomi played to a goalless draw in Gbarnga with Montserrado and Margibi ending fulltime 1-1.
Sinoe won at home against Rivercess 2-0 as Grand Gedeh defeated a southeast sister 2-1 in Zwedru.
In Kickball, Lofa and Gbarpolu drew 7-7, Bomi won Maryland 2-1, Montserrado and Margibi drew 1-1, Grand Gedeh lost 1-0 to Grand Kru, Sinoe lost to Rivercess 1-0.
