Residents of Nahn Village in Electoral District 4 in Bong County are calling for the dedication of housing units built by the Weah led-government.
President Weah in December 2020, broke grounds for the construction of 100 modern housing units both in Lower and Upper Bong County, but to date, the government has constructed 20 of said housing units in the county.
During the groundbreaking ceremony, the Liberian leader told jubilant residents that the presidential pro-poor housing project was an actualization of his campaign promise made in 2017 to the Liberian people.
The President said it was unacceptable for Liberians to continue living in shanty structures and in such miserable and deplorable conditions.
President Weah assured the residents of Weanesue and Nahn Villages that, like their counterparts in other places, they will also have the experience of living in homes that contain kitchens, bathrooms and other facilities.
But in an interview with Inquirer Newspaper in Nahn village which is along the Gbarnga-Lofa road in Bong County, the residents explained that their homes were broken by the mandate of the government with an assurance that they were going to rebuild them within three months period.
According to the residents, the housing units have been completed, but the government is yet to announce an official date for the dedication ceremony, a situation they said is causing serious embarrassment for them as inhabitants of the village.
They added that they have been sleeping in bushes for over a year as a result of the delay in the dedication process.
Meanwhile, the residents further alleged that the village recently lost one of its elderly mothers as a result of sleeping in the bush.
The Nahn Village residents said elderly women, men, and children are being attacked daily with malaria and other illnesses because they have been sleeping in the cold.
“Since our houses were broken down by the government in December 2020, we have been sleeping under the kitchens on our farms, thus causing us serious health hazards. We are begging President Weah to please dedicate our houses to us,” they added.
The residents also used the medium to call on the district 4 lawmaker, Robert Flomo Womba, to help construct a pump for them as done for other citizens in order to have access to safe drinking water.
The housing project is being implemented by the Liberia Agency for Community Empowerment (LACE).
