Aaron Sackie Fenlah, the Chairman of Bong County Council has revealed that the lack of a vehicle is a major impediment to the council’s operations in the County.
Chairman Fenlah highlighted that since taking office, the council has struggled with mobility issues, which he claims seriously hampering their ability to meet the responsibilities outlined in the Local Government Act of 2018.
Mr. Fenlah is calling on the county administration headed by Superintendent Hawa Loleyah Norris to allocate funds for the purchase of a vehicle to facilitate the Council activities.
He further stated that the lack of mobility hinders the evaluation of the county’s already budgeted projects.
The Bong County Local Council Chairman stated that the lack of transportation is particularly problematic in Liberia, where many regions are challenging to access, citing that the situation complicates communication, service delivery, and oversight functions essential for effective governance.
The Chairman of the Bong County Council warned that if the mobility issue currently facing the council is not addressed promptly, it could hinder council representatives’ access to and service for communities, especially those in remote areas.
The chairman noted that council members are finding it increasingly difficult to attend meetings, conduct site visits, and engage effectively with residents due to transportation limitations. This has resulted in delays in decision-making and a failure to adequately meet community needs.
Fenlah also expressed concerns regarding oversight and accountability, asserting that the lack of mobility is compromising the council’s ability to monitor projects, oversee service providers, and ensure compliance with regulations.
This, according to him, can lead to inefficiencies, potential corruption, and a decline in transparency in local governance.
He cautioned that the ongoing mobility issues could lead to greater social and political instability, as citizens may feel marginalized and less involved in the governance process.
Chairman Fenlah made a direct appeal to the county’s administration, headed by Superintendent Loleyah Hawa Norris, urging her to procure a vehicle immediately to improve the council’s functionality.
Concerns have been raised about the mysterious disappearance of US$95,000 from the approved budget allocations.
Recently, the local council allocated US$280,000 for the renovation of the Presidential Palace, US$75,000 for constructing a Junior high school in Kolli-ta Wolah Town, and US$30,000 for the renovation of public facilities damaged by a recent windstorm.
However, the total amount allocated for these expenses is US$385,000, leaving an unexplained US$95,000 unaccounted for.
