Bomi County Community College (BCCC) authorities have sent out scouts to recruit students by encouraging them to enroll into the institution, aimed at improving on the limited 100 that are there at the moment.
The committee is been mandated to encourage secondary school leavers (graduates) who are unwilling to seek advanced education on grounds that the college is not granting full degree, rather Associate of Arts (AA) degree, to have a change of mind.
BCCC’s President, Dr. Abimelech Gbatu, told the media this week in Tubmanburg that because of the above-mentioned, coupled with a registration fee of L$5,000, enrollment at the college has dropped considerably.
He said most of the high school leavers want to enroll for a full degree granting program, instead of half (Associate of Arts), which they believe is a waste of time, energy, and resources.
Gbatu believes that while it is true that those arguments are genuine, it is worthwhile to have some academic engagement, instead of just sitting idle without doing anything, as efforts are underway to elevate the college to a full-fledged university any moment.
With this, he said most of the secondary school leavers or graduates are leaving the county (Bomi) for Montserrado, or migrating to other counties seeking educational greener pastures.
He is of the opinion that sending scouts to various communities, including villages and towns where some of these graduates reside, encouraging them for their own tomorrow, will be in the best interest of themselves, their families, and also the county (Bomi).
In 2018, the immediate past regime announced free tuition fees for public universities and colleges, besides registration fee, throughout the country, and that has given way to huge enrollment of those seeking advanced studies.
At the moment, there are 7 public universities, including the University of Liberia, Tubman University, Nimba University, Lofa County University, Harbel University in Margibi and Grand Bassa University College.
For colleges, they include Bong Technical College, Grand Kru, Grand Gedeh, Sinoe, Grand Cape, and Bomi.
