Since the launch of the national cleaning up campaign in December ahead of the January 2024 inauguration of Amb. Joseph Boakai and Jeremiah Koung as President and Vice President of the Republic of Liberia, the Boakai Square has taken the lead in cleaning the township of Caldwell and its environs.
According to the co-chairman for administration, who is heading the cleaning up exercise, the organization began the cleaning up exercise from the Caldwell Bridge to as far as the Dixville Junction in Caldwell, noting that members of the organization have committed themselves to working for their community and the country at large.
“I see our involvement in this exercise not as a politically sanctioned activity, but as a community service to our people. All of the women and men, as well as young people sweeping and cleaning garbage from the streets, have committed themselves to working for their community,” Ernest Nyema, popularly known as Maximum, said.
He added, “As far as we know, the elections are over and we have put down our campaign gadgets and have begun the nation building, just to be cleaning up our communities. This is why we have taken upon ourselves to assemble here every day after our various working hours to work on our main road.”
Pointing to a dump site, he complained that some community members are not helping to maintain the tidiness of the area, as they are in the constant habit of throwing trash and other solid waste in places that they have given a facelift to.
“This is the third time that we are here pushing the dirt that is almost on the main road behind. Each time we try to clean up the place, some community members and business people around here will put in more garbage,” he complained.
Nyema observed that his organization has received no contribution from the National Cleaning Up Campaign Team nor from any individual or group of people for the services they are rendering.
“All of the materials, including shovels, hoes, paint, brushes, jackets, as well as refreshment, are handled by me, some executives of the organization, and some private individuals,” he pointed.
Nyema noted that it’s time that Liberians roll up their sleeves and begin to take up community service activities that will enhance the sanitation of their community.
The Boakai Square is an auxiliary of the Unity Party, with headquarters in Monrovia.
