As Liberians mourned and decorated their love once graves, President Joseph N. Boakai has led a solemn tour to the gravesites of some of Liberia’s former presidents, paying homage to their contributions, while urging citizens to embrace unity and reconciliation for national progress.
On Wednesday, March 12, 2025 President Boakai visited the graves of former Presidents Williams V.S Tubman at the Centennial Memorial Pavilion, and Charles B. Warner and also paid a visit to the mass grave in Duport Road, while passing through the Palm Grove Cemetery on Center Street in Monrovia.
Speaking with reporters after the gravesites’ tour, President Boakai underscored his government’s commitment to honoring Liberia’s history and fostering national cohesion.
“It is about time that we consider the value placed on each and every Liberians irrespective of their family background and tribes,” he said.
President Boakai also told Liberians to consider the holiday (Decoration Day) as the era of reconciliation; stating that it is time for the government to build the lives of all Liberians and to prepare the country for a better future for the younger generation.
Speaking about what prompted the tour, Boakai said, “Each and every President served this country; they took leadership to lead this country and their lives are no more.”
President Boakai narrated that it is always good to honor people because when you honor others, you will be honored.
He however emphasized the need for unity, stating, “Our past leaders, despite their differences, played crucial roles in shaping Liberia. It is now our responsibility to build on their legacies by working together as one people for a stronger, more peaceful nation.
Many in attendance lauded the initiative, describing it as a step toward healing past divisions and promoting a shared national identity.
As the nation reflects on its past, President Boakai’s call for unity serves as a reminder that Liberia’s future depends on the collective efforts of its citizens, regardless of political or social affiliations.
