The president of the West Africa Central Conference (WACC) and Resident Bishop of the Liberia Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church (UMC), Bishop Samuel J. Quire has condemned the violent attack on members of the United Methodist Church (UMC) in Nigeria that resulted in the death of a devoted church member and left four others seriously wounded.
The attack, which occurred in the Zailana Dorofai District of Nigeria, was reportedly carried out by individuals affiliated with the breakaway Global Methodist Church (GMC), according to a statement released by the Nigeria Episcopal Area of the UMC.
The assailants allegedly stormed church property, sparking a violent confrontation that led to the tragic death of Alhaji B. Sambo a dedicated member, husband, and father of three and left Mrs. Victoria Bawa Michael and three others gravely injured.
Bishop Quire expressed his profound sorrow and grave concern over the incident, declaring, “As President of the West Africa Central Conference College of Bishops, I strongly and unequivocally condemn the use of violence as a means of conflict resolution. Such actions only lead to further harm, suffering, and division.”
Calling for peace, justice, and reconciliation, Bishop Quire urged the Global Methodist Church to cease all forms of aggression and allow United Methodists in Nigeria and beyond to freely practice their faith and ministry in accordance with the laws of their respective states.
He offered his heartfelt condolences to the grieving families and reaffirmed the commitment of the WACC to stand in solidarity with the Nigerian United Methodist community:
“We pray for God’s comfort, healing, and justice during this painful time. The Church must remain an instrument of peace and an agent of healing in a world torn apart by conflict.”
Bishop Quire also appealed to the Nigerian government, the international community, and the global United Methodist Church to launch a full investigation into the incident and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
In closing, he urged United Methodists in Nigeria to reject retaliation and respond with peace, guided by the words of Romans 12:21:
“Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.”
As prayers continue to rise for Bishop Ande I. Emmanuel, his family, and the wounded members of the church, the West Africa Central Conference remains steadfast in calling for calm, justice, and the reign of the Prince of Peace.
