The African Methodist Episcopal University (AMEU) has proudly graduated over 525 students with an urge to carry the legacy of the institution into the world, serving as responsible ambassadors and making positive impacts on their generations.
In his address at the 24th Commencement Convocation held on November 13, at the Jordan Agricultural Institute Township in Roseville, Montserrado County, the president of AMEU, Alvin Attah, encouraged the graduates about the journey of knowledge and urged them to continue to strive for excellence as they transition from their academic lives to their professional futures in the society.
“Today, you are armed not only with the knowledge and skills gained during your time with us, but also with the values and principles that our institution stands for,” Attah told the graduates.
He urged the graduates saying, “As you embark on this new chapter, I have no doubt that your potential is boundless and your contributions will be extraordinary.”
The graduates, including both undergraduate and graduate candidates, completed programs in various fields. Graduate students earned degrees in disciplines such as Master of Executive Business Administration in Corporate and Public Finance, Procurement and Supply Chain Management, and Master of Arts in Foreign Service Leadership, International Relations, and Theological Studies.
While undergraduate degrees were awarded in fields including Bryant Theological Seminary, Counseling, Education, Sociology, Mass Communication, Healthcare Policy, Economics, and more.
Attah expressed immense pride in the academic achievements of the graduates, highlighting the resilience and commitment of the university, faculty, staff, and students.
He reflected on the challenges the institution faced over the past year, particularly in adapting to an ever-evolving educational landscape, while continuing to provide quality education through innovative means such as hybrid learning and the integration of technology.
“Our collective resilience in the face of adversity has been remarkable. We’ve continued to push the boundaries of knowledge, from groundbreaking advancements in health sciences to pioneering work in sustainable technologies. Our students’ research contributions, including publications in international journals, reflect the quality of education at AMEU,” he noted.
The university’s recent innovations in technology were also celebrated. AMEU became the first university in Liberia to provide students with access to the EBSCO Host E-library platform, offering 24/7 access to academic resources. In collaboration with the U.S. Embassy, AMEU has also established an American Shelf in its library, providing students with resources on U.S. policy, education, and cultural exchange.
Attah spoke about AMEU’s growing international partnerships, such as those with Heritage Christian University College in Ghana and Ghana Communication Technology University.
The partnerships offer AMEU students’ opportunities to earn both degrees and professional certifications in fields like business and accounting.
The president also emphasized the university’s commitment to community engagement and diversity, citing various outreach programs that have made a meaningful impact in local communities.
He took special note of AMEU’s efforts to support students with disabilities, such as Mr. Lovett Michael Weah, a visually impaired graduate who earned a Master’s degree in International Development with honors. Weah was honored with the President’s Award for Perseverance and Courage.
“Despite the challenges of commuting daily and navigating the campus, Mr. Weah’s determination and perseverance have been exemplary. His success serves as a beacon of inspiration to us all,” Attah said.
President Attah expressed his pride in the university’s progress and the promise of future contributions from the graduating class. “This is a moment of great pride for all of us, and I am overwhelmed by the sense of accomplishment that fills the air. You are well-prepared to embrace the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.”
AMEU’s Class of 2024 leaves a legacy of resilience, innovation, and academic excellence, as they are poised to make meaningful contributions to Liberia and the world.
As Keynote Speaker, Kartumu Boakai said, “We begin with something lighter. They say wisdom comes with age, and if that is true, then having gone back to school in my 70s, I might just be the wisest person here today.”
“I am honored to be here to share this momentous occasion with you. Graduates, as I look at you, I see the future of Liberia shining brightly. This future will be shaped by the resilience, knowledge, and values you carry forward from this day,” she asserted.
Madam Boakai reflected on her own journey, beginning in a small village in Bomi County and rising to become the First Lady saying, “It was through resilience that I overcame obstacles. My story started in a tiny village, where I walked miles to reach a classroom. And despite the many challenges I faced, my spirit never wavered.”
She urged the graduates to be resilient in the face of challenges, recalling her own experiences of overcoming adversity.
“Resilience is key. Your journey will be tough at times, but remember that every challenge is a stepping stone to success. You have the power to transform these obstacles into opportunities for growth,” she stressed.
Madam Boakai also emphasized the transformative power of education. “From a small village in Liberia to the halls of the University of Liberia and the Liberia Baptist Theological Seminary, my educational journey has reshaped my life. Education is not just about acquiring knowledge; it is about transforming your entire world. It broadens your perspective and gives you the tools to bridge the gap between your past and your potential.”
She shared a powerful message on the importance of faith, family, and perseverance reiterating, “I have been sustained by my faith in God, and I encourage you to do the same. Remember, you can do all things through Christ who strengthens you.”
“Liberia is counting on you. You are the new generation of leaders, thinkers, and builders who will shape our country’s future. Take responsibility for the blessings of resilience, education, family, and faith. Let these guide you as you strive to make a difference in the world.” She emphasized.
She encouraged the graduates to embrace their future. “Every challenge you face is a stepping stone to greatness. Every lesson learned is a tool for the future, and every act of kindness is a building block for a stronger nation. May God bless you, and may He continue to bless the Republic of Liberia.”
