The Grand Bassa University (GBU) under the leadership of its Interim Management led by Samuel Reeves has taken a step toward transforming agriculture in Liberia.
The university is collaborating with the African Development Bank (AfDB) on a groundbreaking agricultural initiative designed to boost local job creation and enhance practical education for students.
This ambitious project, centered on the College of Agriculture and Food Sciences, promises to equip students with real-world skills while addressing unemployment in the region.
According to university officials, the initiative seeks to establish a sustainable model for agricultural growth, combining academic expertise with community engagement.
A key component of this initiative is the arrival of 40- and 20-foot containers at the university campus. While their contents remain officially sealed, sources confirm that the containers primarily house rice processing machinery.
This equipment is expected to be integral to the university’s plans to revolutionize rice production in Grand Bassa County, from cultivation to processing and distribution.
Rev. Reeves expressed his excitement about the project, emphasizing its potential to empower local farmers and prepare students for careers in agriculture.
“This collaboration aligns perfectly with our mission to foster innovation and economic development through education,” he stated.
The African Development Bank’s involvement underscores the regional and international importance of this endeavor. By investing in agricultural infrastructure and education, the partnership aims to address food security challenges in Liberia while opening up new economic opportunities for the community.
As the project unfolds, it is expected to create numerous employment opportunities for local residents, particularly in the areas of farming, machinery operation, and product distribution.
Students will also gain invaluable hands-on experience, bridging the gap between theoretical learning and practical application.
With the university and AfDB working closely together, this initiative has the potential to position Grand Bassa University as a leader in agricultural innovation in Liberia and beyond.
For now, the community eagerly awaits the unveiling of the equipment and the commencement of activities that promise to bring tangible benefits to both the university and the surrounding area.
