Grand Bassa County Superintendent Karyou Johnson has laid out a detailed overview of the county’s financial position, ongoing development initiatives, and future plans.
The press conference, held last week at the Superintendent’s Administrative Building Office, drew local media, civil society actors, and county officials.
The event opened on a solemn note, with a moment of silence held in memory of a respected figure in the county’s educational and civic spheres. The tribute served as a poignant reminder of the enduring contributions made by individuals dedicated to public service and community development.
Superintendent Johnson emphasized that human resources remain the cornerstone of the county’s progress.
He reported that 204 employees are currently on the government payroll, supported by 18 volunteers and 19 individuals awaiting benefit processing.
“Human resources are pivotal for our progress,” Johnson stated. “A committed and efficient workforce is essential to drive our development agenda forward.”
Johnson also provided updates on the county’s operational capacity.
The county currently operates with two vehicles and two generators, one of which is assigned to the development officer.
Despite minor technical issues, he noted that both generators remain operational and critical to day-to-day functions.
A major highlight of the briefing was the county’s financial standing. Superintendent Johnson revealed that upon taking office, he inherited a near-depleted account just US$163.73 and L$5,925,435.44 remained in the Central Bank of Liberia account for the county.
Since then, the administration has secured significant funding, including US$1M from the Social Development Fund and US$186,666 from the County Development Fund.
The Superintendent assured the public that these funds are being strategically directed toward key infrastructure and development initiatives.
Johnson spotlighted several projects already underway, including the construction of administrative buildings and the renovation of city halls.
While some projects have received full funding, others remain incomplete due to financial constraints and a need for increased oversight.
“Our vision is clear,” Johnson said. “We need more investment and consistent supervision to ensure every project reaches completion and delivers value to our citizens,” said Supt. Johnson.
In a move to boost public trust and accountability, Johnson announced that an internal auditor will review the financial records and turnover notes from the previous administration.
The county’s financial officer has also been tasked with defining signature protocols for accessing county accounts.
Johnson disclosed that a critical stakeholder meeting is being planned to discuss the recent US$400,000 deposit from Mining PV Limited.
The funds are expected to support local infrastructure and economic development.
Wrapping up the conference, Superintendent Johnson extended appreciation to the media for its role in disseminating accurate information.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to transparency, effective governance, and public accountability.
“We are committed to transparent governance, and we look forward to sharing our progress with you,” he told reporters
