Deplorable road condition is creating serious concern for cross border trade between Liberian and Guinea at the Gompa main border post.
Speaking at the border, some senior custom officers who spoke on the basis of anonymity revealed that bad road on Guinean side of the borders is creating serious hardship among members of the two countries joint security and is hampering cross border trade .
According to a member of the joint security, many commercial vehicles from Guinea border towns along the St. John River Belt are now making detour through Yekepa to enter Liberia.
“The border is not moving at all, we come here every day to work, business people are not coming from both sides of the borders due to bad road in Guinea ,” an officer of the Liberia Immigration Service(LIS) pointed out .
“Many of the staff are not coming to work every day. For us security, we are forced to be here to protect the borders from illegal entry into the country,” a senior LNP officer disclosed .
Speaking to the Inquirer further, LRA officer disclosed that collection of government revenues has dropped below anticipated target, on grounds that no used vehicles are currently entering from Guinea to Liberia .
Nimba is comprised of five government national borders that served as contributory gateways to the Liberian economy in term of revenue collection.
Since the beginning of 2025, report of alleged smuggling of petroleum products, huge consignments of truckloads of 25 kg rice, and cement at various port of entries in Nimba County.
The Gompa main border is among leading land borders in Liberia that is comprised of seven local borders beside the main border and is supervised by LIS commander Korto Yarkpazuor.
When contacted, LRA senior customs collectors referred this paper to the LRA’s corporate communication director in Monrovia on issues pertaining to LRA’s operations.
