The County Education Officer (CEO) of Maryland, Larry Nimely, has issued a stern warning to public schools’ teachers allegedly receiving salaries from multiple government institutions.
He declared that his office will begin laying off offenders caught in such act.
Speaking during a district education assessment held in Karluway District 3 on April 14, 2025, Mr. Nimely revealed that preliminary investigations suggest at least 101 teachers in the county are involved in what he described as “double-dipping”—a practice that undermines the education system and deprives qualified candidates of employment opportunities.
“These individuals are taking salaries from two or more government institutions while neglecting their actual classroom responsibilities,” Nimely stated. “This is not just unethical; it’s a violation of government policy.”
Among those accused are teachers reportedly employed at public schools and the William V. S. Tubman University.
Mr. Nimely said the situation has prompted his office, in collaboration with local authorities, to launch a formal probe while teachers implicated in the practice are being asked to choose between their positions or face termination.
He also expressed concern over reports that some teachers have sought study leave to pursue higher education in other counties but have remained within Maryland County and refused to take up their assigned posts.
“We have teachers who are on the government’s payroll but are not in the classroom,” he stated. “This level of irresponsibility will no longer be tolerated.”
Mr. Nimely said his office is considering suspending the salaries of those under investigation and replacing them with qualified job seekers who are waiting for employment.
Reaffirming his commitment to uphold the Ministry of Education’s standards, the CEO warned that schools found in violation of national education policies could face the revocation of their operating licenses.
“The Ministry of Education remains firm in its stance,” he concluded. “Any institution or individual caught violating the standards will face the full weight of the law.”
