Report emanating from Yekepa, Nimba County says another death was discovered at the ArcelorMittal Liberia operating site just weeks following the discovery of a dead body in one of its train wagons.
The latest incident involved the death of an articulated dump truck (ADT) operator at the iron ore mines in Yekepa, Roseline Borbor, who met her untimely death on Thursday morning, June 6, 2024.
The incident, according to information gathered from Nimba, took place when the ADT truck she was operating somersaulted off a hill, leading to her demise which is still a shock across the county.
The truck lose control while navigating a slope within the mine premises, causing it to overturn dramatically; but some of her colleagues termed it as an accident, though it could be avoided.
The two deaths in recent times have prompted serious concerns about the safety and operational protocols at ArcelorMittal Liberia’s sites and the series of events began with the unsettling discovery of a corpse in one of the company’s train wagons.
Borbor, known as a dedicated and professional employee, had been with ArcelorMittal for a year, during which time she earned a reputation for her dedication, professionalism, and kindness and her sudden death has cast dark cloud over the company, leading to an outpouring of grief from relatives and sympathizers.
In response to Borbor’s death, ArcelorMittal said it has initiated a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident and has temporarily shut down the iron ore mines in Yekepa to conduct an immediate review of its safety protocols and procedures.
According to the company, the move aims to prevent such accidents from occurring in the future and to ensure that the highest standards of safety are maintained thus extending its deepest sympathies to the Borbor’s family during this incredibly challenging time.
They, however, committed to supporting the family, providing both immediate assistance and ongoing support, and added, “Roseline was an exemplary employee whose contributions to our business along with the positive impact she made on everyone around her will always be remembered.”
The outcomes of the ongoing investigations and the actions taken in their wake will be closely monitored, serving as a measure of the company’s dedication to safeguarding its workforce and upholding its operational integrity.
