The Alternative National Congress (ANC) has strongly condemned Justice Minister Oswald Tweh’s alleged misinterpretation of the Supreme Court’s opinion and the unconstitutional removal of Fonati Koffa as Speaker of the 55th Legislature.
In a statement released, the ANC expressed deep concern over what it described as a violation of Liberia’s democratic principles and constitutional order.
The ANC criticized the Justice Minister’s legal opinion, accusing it of distorting the Supreme Court’s ruling to justify actions by the Majority Bloc in the House of Representatives.
The party denounced the removal of Speaker Koffa as a dangerous return to undemocratic practices, warning it could damage Liberia’s credibility and stability.
“This incident reminds us of a time when democratic principles were disregarded to serve the interests of the powerful, to the detriment of our nation,” the ANC stated.
While acknowledging the Majority Bloc’s right to change leadership, the ANC emphasized that such actions must follow constitutional provisions and the House’s rules. “We categorically condemn the Speaker’s removal, an act that blatantly violates both the House’s rules and the Constitution of Liberia. Failure to uphold the rule of law is unacceptable,” the statement said.
The ANC also criticized the “hasty and unlawful takeover,” describing it as a reflection of the administration’s disregard for democratic governance.
The party warned that such instability could deter investors and harm Liberia’s economic prospects.
“The orchestrated removal of the Speaker does not enhance the government’s credibility; instead, it reveals a pattern of settling political scores at the expense of stability,” the ANC noted.
The party called on Liberians, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders to reject the removal of Speaker Koffa and the Justice Minister’s interpretation of the court’s ruling.
“We urge all well-meaning citizens to join us in advocating for governance that upholds the rule of law and strengthens democracy,” the ANC declared.
