The Association of Liberia Community Radio (ALICOR) has commenced a two-day Constitution Review Meeting in Kakata, Margibi County from Wednesday November 27-28, 2024.
This marks the first review and amendment of ALICOR’s constitution since its formation in 2005.
ALICOR was founded following the first national community radio conference, held under the USAID-sponsored Mercy Corps Diompilor Project.
Since then, the association has serving as a voice of advocacy and support for community radio stations across Liberia.
Speaking on behalf of ALICOR’s Executive Committee during the opening ceremony, ALICOR President, Hector Mulbah emphasized the importance of updating the constitution to align with the realities of the modern media era.
He noted that the amendments will address ALICOR’s challenges, reflect its progress, and position it for continued relevance.
ALICOR President Mulbah also expressed deep appreciation to Internews and the Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA) for funding the constitution review process.
He announced that the outcomes of this two-day meeting will undergo validation in Buchanan, Grand Bassa County in December.
In his remarks, ALICOR Board Chair, Teah Doegmah, commended the organization’s resilience despite numerous challenges over the years.
He urged the review committee to approach the process with an open mind and prioritize the best interests of ALICOR.
Meanwhile, Emmanuel Johnson, Consultant of the Constitution Review Committee and former ALICOR Secretary General, highlighted the need for the review.
He pointed out that the original constitution, adopted in 2005, reflected a time when community radio stations were far fewer.
Johnson described the review as a vital step toward rebranding ALICOR and strengthening its role in Liberia’s media sector.
The Association of Liberia Community Radio (ALICOR) is the umbrella body advocating for community radio stations across Liberia.
It was founded in 2005 to promote community media, support capacity-building initiatives, and champion the voices of local communities.
