Sixteen high schools in Montserrado County will participate in the 2025 World Water Day Football and Kickball Championship from March 18–21, as part of efforts to raise awareness about the global observance of World Water Day on March 22.
The tournament, organized by National High School Sports in collaboration with the National Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene Commission (NWASHC) and WASH stakeholders, will promote this year’s theme: “Glacier Preservation.”
The participating schools include defending champions World Wide Mission, Nathan E. Gibson, Gray D. Allison, Carver Mission Academy, Len Miller, St. Simon Baptist, Kings and Queens International School, A.M. Fofana, New Destiny Christian High School, Kendeja High School, First Assembly of God-Buchanan Street, Muslim Congress, E. Jonathan Goodridge, James Doe Young, St. Michael High School, and Assembly of God-Caldwell.
The matches will be played at four venues: Right To Play Field, Alpha Field, Stephen Tolbert Field, and Slipway Field. The event will also feature an essay competition involving over 1,500 students from the participating schools, with a cash prize and a trophy awarded to the winning essayist and their school.
Additionally, the WASH Commission and other key partners, including the Ministry of Health, WaterAid Liberia, Liberia Water and Sewer Corporation, UNICEF, Samaritan’s Purse, Catholic Relief Services, Ministry of Public Works, and NPHIL, will engage students in interactive sessions. These sessions will be hosted at World Wide Mission High School and Len Miller High School on March 19 and 20 to educate students about WASH-related issues in Liberia.
Winners of the football and kickball competitions will receive cash prizes and trophies, while runners-up will be awarded cash prizes. The initiative underscores the importance of sports in youth development and education, as championed by National High School Sports, which has led similar projects in collaboration with institutions such as the National Malaria Control Program, UNESCO, and the Central Bank of Liberia.
The tournament’s opening fixtures on Tuesday, March 18, will see eight matchups across the four venues, with schools battling for early dominance in the championship.
This year’s event marks the third edition of the World Water Day Football and Kickball Championship, reinforcing the link between sports and social awareness campaigns in Liberia.
