The University of Liberia Faculty and Staff Association (ULFASA) has urged the newly appointed 16th president of the University of Liberia, Layli Phillips Maparyan, to address the significant challenges tied to her role.
Maparyan’s appointment by President Joseph Boakai, following approval by the university’s Board of Trustees in accordance with its charter, has been met with optimism. An Executive Mansion statement praised her leadership and integrity.
In a press release issued on Tuesday, January 7, and signed by ULFASA Secretary-General Eric T. S. Patten, the association congratulated Maparyan and commended the University of Liberia Presidential Search Committee for its rigorous and transparent selection process.
ULFASA acknowledged the immense challenges facing the university, including issues affecting faculty, staff, and students. The release highlighted the urgent need for transformative leadership to address long-standing problems that have hindered the institution’s operations.
In June 2024, ULFASA halted all teaching activities over unpaid salaries for part-time lecturers and poor working conditions. The association also called for the resignation of then-president Julius Sarwolo Nelson, citing unaddressed grievances such as insufficient transportation, inadequate infrastructure, and violent student protests.
ULFASA President Edna Johnny emphasized at the time that prior discussions with the administration had failed to resolve these issues, which remain a concern as Dr. Maparyan begins her tenure.
Despite the daunting task ahead, ULFASA expressed optimism, stressing that meaningful reforms would require strategic planning, decisive action, and collaboration. The association pledged its support and readiness to work with Maparyan and other stakeholders to find sustainable solutions.
“In these challenging times, ULFASA stands ready to partner with the new administration to address the issues plaguing the University of Liberia,” the release stated.
ULFASA also urged its members to remain calm as ongoing discussions aim to resolve welfare concerns for faculty, staff, and students are on track.
