The Ministry of State for Presidential Affairs has dismissed three high-ranking officials following several breaches of government regulations that led to the misuse of public funds.
The dismissed officials, Lamine Sharpe, Director of Budget and Finance; Harry Sando, Financial Comptroller, and Mohammed Kromah, Assistant Minister for Human Resources were found to have engaged in illicit activities under the controversial Supplementary Payroll scheme, an issue uncovered by the Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission (LACC) following an in-depth investigation.
The investigation included interviews, financial record analysis, and the collection of statements. The review of documents revealed evidence of payroll padding thereby prompting swift and decisive action by the Ministry.
The government, however, cleared Deputy Financial Controller, James Tolker, of any involvement, reinstating him to his position.
These actions are in line with President Joseph Boakai’s commitment to safeguarding public resources and his administration’s policy of zero-tolerance for corruption.
Speaking to cabinet members on August 2, 2024, President Boakai underscored the importance of integrity in public office, reminding officials that the primary duty is to serve the Liberian people.
He made it clear that any individual caught pursuing personal or hidden agenda would face immediate dismissal, emphasizing that those appointed to office must demonstrate a deep commitment to the country’s prosperity.
“Our government is committed to ensuring that Liberia, in its 177th year, can finally move beyond the corruption that has plagued it for so long,” President Boakai said. “Any official found violating this principle will be held accountable, with no room for repeat offenses.”
He further warned that any attempt to undermine the government’s mission would result in swift action.
“We chose you because you are people of integrity who love Liberia. But if you repeat the mistakes of the past, we will take decisive action,” he added.
This action of dismissals sends a strong message of accountability to all government officials, reinforcing the administration’s commitment to ethical leadership and transparent management of public resources.
With these dismissals, the Ministry of State aims to strengthen its governance framework, ensuring that Liberia’s citizens are served with the utmost integrity and responsibility.
