The Ministry of Public Works (MPW) has initiated consultations with key stakeholders, including the Liberia National Police (LNP), to improve the condition of major roads within Monrovia. This move is part of the government’s efforts to enhance road infrastructure across the country, particularly during the dry season.
On Tuesday, November 13, 2024, a meeting held in Monrovia brought together senior officials from both institutions and was led by Assistant Ministers for Operations and Construction, Margaret Sarsih, and Sundiata Juasemai, along with the Deputy Police Inspector General for Operations (102), Col. J. Nelson Freeman.
The Meeting focused on the setting up of a Technical Working Group comprising all stakeholders aimed at regulating the traffic and other ordinance issues for smooth maintenance works this Dry Season, mainly along the Gabriel Tucker, Freeport to St. Paul Bridge corridor.
The meeting underscored the importance of collaboration between the MPW and the LNP in facilitating uninterrupted roadwork operations.
It was stressed that traffic management and maintaining safety on these busy routes would be critical during the maintenance period, which will take place during the upcoming dry season.
Assistant Minister Sarsih emphasized that the road works are part of the government’s commitment to improving transportation infrastructure across the capital. She noted that the improvement of these vital roadways is expected to ease traffic congestion and enhance safety for commuters, businesses, and residents in the affected areas.
The collaboration between the MPW and the LNP comes at a crucial time as the government accelerates its infrastructure development agenda. With the dry season fast approaching, officials are keen on completing the road maintenance works without major disruptions to daily traffic flow.
Meanwhile, the LNP has expressed its readiness to support the project, emphasizing the importance of proper traffic control measures, especially in high-traffic areas like Freeport and St. Paul Bridge, where road works are expected to cause some level of congestion.
In the spirit of collaborative effort, the MPW and LNP are expected to meet regularly to discuss strategies for traffic management, public safety, and the timely completion of the road improvement project, which is aimed at significantly benefiting commuters in Monrovia and surrounding communities.
