The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sarah Beysolow Nyanti clarifying concerns about Liberia’s diplomatic passports said foreigners may hold Liberian diplomatic passports if they serve in specific roles, such as international consultants or honorary consuls.
She explained that the practice is common worldwide and in line with international governance and pointed out that the Ministry is working with partners, including the U.S. government, to ensure transparency and prevent any abuses of the system.
“This consultant, whose passport was recently circulated, has been instrumental in helping us secure additional scholarships in Mauritius. We’re committed to transparency and reform in our passport issuance processes,” she reiterated.
Meanwhile, in other development, Minister Nyanti affirmed that the government’s commitment to creating educational and professional opportunities for Liberians while ensuring that those who receive support return to contribute to Liberia’s development.
“This work-study program is a testament to our efforts to build a stronger Liberia. For those considering applying, remember that the requirement is clear: you must come back to serve your country,” she added while announcing the ambitious new work-study program valued at $25 million, which was launched on Wednesday, aimed at supporting Liberian students who are pursuing graduate degrees in the United States.
Minister Nyanti made the disclosure at the Ministry of Information regular press briefing on November 5, and noted that the program will enable 250 Liberian students to pursue master’s degrees in the United States.
She further explained that the program, which has been developed in partnership with the Ministry of Education, is designed to give selected students both academic and work experience to help them bring valuable skills back to Liberia.
“We’re thrilled to share this initiative that will allow 250 Liberian students, aged 25 to 40, to study and work in the U.S,” She disclosed.
Minister Nyanti also highlighted the Ministry’s recent success in expanding educational opportunities outside the U.S., with 15 scholarships now available for Liberian students in Mauritius.
This increase is part of a broader focus on educational partnerships to offer students valuable international experience.
