Liberia’s Marketing Association Superintendent Winifred Guah says lack of loan to help marketers buy goods is hampering the smooth running of the marketing association branch in Nimba.
Speaking over the weekend in Sanniquellie, Superintendent Guah explained that the lack of financial institutions to provide loans for members of the LMA branch in the county is creating serious hardship on many of the market women including sending their children to school.
According to Superintendent Guah, many of the women selling in the various markets are single mothers that are struggling to support her children through business.
Superintendent Guah further disclosed that there is an ongoing construction of modern market buildings in Ganta, Saclepea and Tappita.
“We want to take this time to beg the government through the Central Bank of Liberia to help the LMA branch in Nimba with loans to build the capacity of marketers so that they are able to increase their produce or goods,” Superintendent Guah pleaded.
“We want loans to help the market women in Sanniquellie Market, Gompa Market, Saclepea Market, Tappeta Market, Buotuo Market, Karnplay Market and the Bahn Market, to promote their market from petty trades to much more bigger and profitable businesses.” the Superintendent stressed.
“The LMA in Nimba bought over 10 acres of land in Sanniquellie where it is constructing the marketers but where we are now, we want loan,” he emphasized.
Nimba is among the 15 counties in Liberia that can boast of more market buildings but they lack modern facilities couple with business finances to strengthen the market sector in the county.
On behalf of the marketers in Nimba, Esther Saye explained that the lack of loan is a serious constraint that sellers are going through the various markets stating, “BRAC is not helping us; if you credit from BRAC and don’t pay on time; they are turned over to the police.”
