Why Labor Arrests Chinese Migrants In Nimba?

By Solomon T. Gaye
Ministry of Labor field inspectors assigned in Nimba are reporting that two Chinese were arrested in Ganta, Nimba County for evading government’s taxes.
Inspectors Tarian Grayan and Darius Deah Kpogbay accused Sheng Zhong and Yoi Ben of doing business in disguise without work permits.
According to the inspectors, preliminary investigations uncovered that the Chinese are operating a gambling Bingo at various social centers which is in violation of section 45 .1 of the Labor Law.
“They are doing illegal business which is punishable under the law,” the inspectors stated.
During a normal routine at the police station in Ganta over the weekend, the two Chinese nationals were seen at the CSD office undergoing an investigation.
“The two Chinese violated section 45.1 which is punishable by a fine of US
$1, 000 or US$3,000 in accordance with the law,” the inspectors from Ministry of Labor explained.
This is the second time Chinese nationals have been arrested in Ganta in less than three months for allegedly being in violation of the Labour law but are most times released without punitive measures by their arresting officers.
During the beginning of March 2024, LIS border patrol arrested a Lebanese Mohamed Pmroty for not having work permit couple with other legal documents but according to the LIS border patrol Commander Smith, Col Gibson released the Lebanese national without investigation.
When the police was contacted, the CSD officer explained that the Chinese was brought to the station by the two senior officers of the Ministry of Labor inspectorate for being in violation of the law.
“We don’t investigate labor issues; we are the police and these inspectors brought these Chinese and they know why,” LNP expressed.
When this paper contacted the two inspectors outside the police premises, they said the case was suspended by the order of the Ministry of Labor Human Resource in Monrovia and therefore remained tightlipped on the matter.
However, the Chinese nationals were later released and investigation continues.
