Despite public outcry from Civil Servants; for December 2019, Executive Mansion says, the government is committed to paying Civil Servants’ salaries and benefits for the months of October and November 2019.
Making the disclosure during the Executive Mansion regular press briefing on Tuesday, Deputy Presidential Press Secretary, Smith Toby, intoned that information gathered from government’s fiscal managers has confirmed that the government is unable to pay December salary due to what he calls limited resources .
Toby said, government has started paying for October and November of 2019 and will be obligated for December which he noted will be paid next year.
“My understanding on conversations around the salary payments is that government will pay from October to November and the month of December will go into New Year,” Mr. Toby said.
“So, for those of you Civil Servants who are concerned about XMAS payment, Gov’t has started payment and the outstanding [December] will move into next year,” he added.
Toby said the Minister of State and Presidential Affair, Nathaniel McGill confirmed such information to the Voice of America days ago. He also indicated that the Minister of Finance, Planning and Development, Samuel Tweah has also informed President George Weah on the outstanding payment of Civil Servants to be paid early 2020.
He said that the President is not sleeping during these times of economic recession-stating that government continues to be engaged with other actors in the body politics of the country aimed at resuscitating the economy.
Meanwhile, Toby has confirmed reasons for the Legislature’s return to extraordinary sessions as required by Article 32(b) of the 1986 Constitution.
He confirmed that the legislature returned to pass series of key financing agreements, and act on nominations from the Executive including the Central Bank for Liberia (CBL), new governor and as well as to finalize on the deliberations and authorization of the printing of the new Liberian banknotes.
