The National Elections Commission (NEC) has announced nineteen aspirants poised to contest in the senatorial by-elections in two counties.
The Grand Gedeh County District 1 Representative slot that was made vacant following the demise of Madison Leroy Wion, and Nimba County Senatorial seat was also made vacant following the election of Senator Jeremiah Koung as Vice president of the Republic of Liberia on November 14, 2023.
Addressing a press conference at its 9th street office in Sinkor, the Chairperson of the National Election Commission (NEC), Davidetta Browne-Lansanah, said 19 aspirants were selected for the senatorial and representative by-elections for the two counties.
“Out of the number, 16 came from Grand Gedeh County while the rest are from Nimba County,” the NEC Chairperson said.
She said 15 candidates’ packages were submitted to the Commission, which were scrutinized and subsequently accepted.
“Following the nomination exercises, what is left now is finance to conduct the elections on the scheduled date. We submitted the budget to the Legislature and the Ministry of Finance and Developing Planning,” she said.
