A Grand Kru County School System assigned vehicle, bearing plate #2381, is seemingly now being commercialized in Ganta, Nimba County.
Speaking to this Paper in Ganta, Federal Road Transport Union of Liberia (FRTUL) officer, James Saye, frowned at Education Minister, Ansu Sonii, citing his alleged failure to punish county education officers using government vehicles for commercial purposes.
According to FRTUL Officer Saye, using government vehicles on commercial purposes is a gross violation, and drastic action needs to be taken against violators, to serve as a deterrent to others.
The Transport Union worker’s statement was triggered by the sight of passengers traveling to the Southeastern region and their tussle with car loaders to board a land cruiser jeep assigned to the Ministry of Education.
Since the end of the October 10, 2023 General Elections, many of the government vehicles have reportedly turned commercial, running between Nimba and the Southeastern region.
ECOWAS Transport Union field officer, Timothy Tiah, weighed in on the issue.
“Government provides gas and fuel to them, but they pick up passengers and charge them, some as much as L$7,000, in the name of buying gas or fuel, and this is very wrong,” Tiah disclosed.
Hopefully, this worrying trend will come to an end with the coming to power of the new government, as such acts undermine the principles of transparent governance and cast doubts over the integrity of government officials.
