With less than two weeks to the national election, the government is assuring the National Elections Commission (NEC) of making available the balance US$53 million needed for the elections preparations.
Finance and Development Planning Minister Samuel Tweah gave the assurance Tuesday, September 26, when he appeared on state-owned broadcaster (ELBC) in Monrovia.
He said, among many things, that the pending elections slated for Tuesday, October 10 is fully funded by the Liberian government and not the international community as it used to be in the past.
Tweah continued that the no materials or no financial threats will not affect the outcome of next month’s polls.
He pointed out that if those payments are not made or concluded before the elections are held, it could render their regime ‘illegitimate’ which shall not augur well for them as a government and also for the country.
For some time now, there has been public outcry for government to make available the balance of over US$3 million to the Commission so as to complete the funding exercise of the electoral process.
This year’s elections are the first solely Liberian-funded in 34 years, since December 1989 when the war breakout and lasted for almost 15 years, ending in August of 2003, following the signing of the Peace Agreement in Accra, Ghana by various players or stakeholders in the country’s body politics.
