The outgoing president of the Press Union of Liberia (PUL) Charles Coffey late Sunday night suffered a broken leg in a fatal road accident that left one dead near Buchanan, Grand Bassa County.
According to reports, Mr. Coffey and his driver were plying the Firestone- Buchanan highway when one of his vehicle’s tires punctured.
They hired a commercial motorcyclist to take them to Buchanan to get a new one and while on the bike, a speeding vehicle ran into them, killing the motorbike rider thereby injuring Coffey and his driver.
The reports added that they were taken to the government hospital in Buchanan for emergency treatment before being transferred to Monrovia by former Representative Bryon Brown.
Meanwhile, the Deputy Information Minister for Press and Public Affairs on behalf of the Government payed an official visit to Coffey at the JFK Memorial Hospital. . Speaking to journalists late Monday evening, Deputy Minister Tonpo said, it is his responsibility as one of the focal persons between the Government and the Press to reach out to Mr. Coffey to intervene in adding urgency to Coffey’s treatment.
“On behalf of the Government, we will as often as possible ensure the welfare of journalists and we are making sure that Mr. Coffey gets the needed urgent attention as we wish him speedy recovery”
