The Liberia Electricity Regulatory Commission (LERC) has launched three regulatory instruments that will accordingly regulate electrical professionals and contractors workings across the country.
The regulations with a focused scoped on the electrical wiring code, certifications and licensing of electricians and electrical wiring regulation were launched yesterday in Monrovia by the commission and its partners.
Speaking at the event, LERC Managing Director Augustus V. Goanue said the launch of the Certification and Licensing of Electrical Professionals and Contractors Regulations, Electrical Wiring Regulations, and Liberia Electrical Wiring Code will achieve an important milestone in the implementation of the 2015 Electricity Law of Liberia, evidenced by the development and approval of the regulatory instruments.
According to him, the milestone has been achieved with the support of the European Union, the Government of Liberia, Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions, electricity services providers, and electricity sector partners.
The Director added that the Electrical Wiring Regulations will establish the requirements, procedures, and practices for the enforcement of minimum standards for the distribution of electrical energy in and around all types of structures including residential and commercial premises, public buildings and playgrounds among others
He added that the regulation will ensure the safety of persons, Livestock, and property from hazards that arise from the use of electricity, including safety against electric shocks, bums, and Liberia Electrical Wiring Code provides the general technical guidelines for implementation of the Certification and Licensing of Electrical Professionals and Contractors Regulations and the Electrical Wiring Regulations.
“Following today’s program, and immediately after the transitional period, no person shall undertake electrical work unless that person has been certified or licensed under these Regulations. We therefore count on the collective support of all electricity sector stakeholders as was exemplified during the technical review and validation workshops to ensure compliance with these regulations,” Goanue asserted.
Launching the regulations, TVET’s Director the Ministry of Education Adolphus Collins noted that the regulations state the qualification that electrical professionals and contractors must have to perform electrical work within the Liberia Electricity supply industry.
“Looking at the types of certifications and licenses to undertake electrical work includes electrician’s certification, inspectors’ certification, solar TV installers’ license, energy editor’s license, and contractors’ license,” Collins said.
He disclosed that there are requirements for the certification or license to undertake electrical work in Liberia and applauded the management of LERC for the certification and licenses of electrical contractors.
